As sturdy as they seem, gravestones and markers are hostage to the elements. What began as crisp engraving becomes too worn to read. Many small graveyards on private property have been bulldozed or became so overgrown they can no longer be recognized. Along with his work as custodians of Alachua County’s ancient records, Jim Powell started the Alachua County Virtual Cemetery Project in to document the vanishing markers and graveyards of Alachua County. He and his team are in the process of photographing every gravestone that can be found in Alachua County. Over time, all of these photographs will be uploaded to the web. Much of the work has already been done and can be found at the website.
At more than 50 acres Evergreen is the largest Cemetery in Alachua. The website can be accessed at the following address: http://www.wizardofar.org
